I can't believe it's already 2022! And I'm already late posting my first monthly wrap-up. Oops!
My plan is to continue on with monthly wrap-ups and occasional full reviews. I have fun doing this, so I'm going to keep at it! So, without further ado, here is my January 2022 wrap-up! January 2022 Wrap-Up 1. Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon 4 out of 5 stars I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. But I also said the same thing about The Sun is Also a Star, so I should know not to underestimate Yoon. I'm not a big fan of romance, and I'm undecided on magical realism. But this book was fun, emotional, and had just the right little touch of magic. I really loved the overall discussion of love and the pain that comes with it. 2. We Are Not Broken by George M. Johnson 4 out of 5 stars This was the first book by Johnson that I've read, so I was not familiar with most of the story. But this is a heartbreaking and powerful read. I loved the focus on the strong woman who had such a strong impact on so many people's lives. 3. List of Ten by Halli Gomez 4 out of 5 stars CW: Suicidal ideation, mental health This book. It was great and it was a perspective I've never read before. But oh my goodness. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get through it because the content was really upsetting at times. I highly recommend it, but proceed with caution and make sure you read the author's note at the end! 4. Year of the Reaper by Makiia Lucier 4 out of 5 stars It took me a bit to get into this one, but then I couldn't put it down. It was unique, exciting, and it's a standalone! 5. When You Look Like Us by Pamela N. Harris 4 out of 5 stars I really liked the examination of the way people of color are treated by the media. It was a quick and interesting read that will definitely leave an impact. 6. Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim 4 out of 5 stars I used to say I'm not a big high fantasy fan, but I have read some great ones recently, and this is one of them. I loved the world and the magic. I loved the mystery elements. I am ready for book two! 7. In the Wild Light by Jeff Zentner 4 out of 5 stars This was my first Jeff Zentner book and I will definitely be going back and reading more. I loved the settings of the book and Cash's relationship with his grandparents. And I cried. Multiple times. 8. Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean 4 out of 5 stars I have never read The Princess Diaries, so I can't comment on similarities other than my knowledge from the movie. However, I feel like this book is more than just a remake of sorts. I love that it explores Izumi's identity-- she's not American enough for America, but not Japanese enough for Japan. It was fun and funny, but I also teared up some. And of course, who doesn't love a good story about a secret princess?
